Parks & Recreation

Parks & Recreation has had the most interesting and challenging year, as you probably experienced the same for you and your family! It continues to be our privilege to provide the community safe and COVID-free outdoor spaces as you maintain your exercise routines and enjoy nature. Between March and October 2020, our park and trail visits totaled 3 million as the great outdoors also grew as a solution for rest and rejuvenation in maintaining our overall wellness.

As we make our way through these challenging times together, our staff works hard to keep you safe and engaged. If you feel “safer at home,” check out our Virtual Programming page where you’ll find fun activities for all ages to do at home, in your yard, or in our parks. Our winter/spring Destination Recreation activity brochure details the complete list of programs, events and activities scheduled* through April.

2021 also marks our 40th anniversary of working in partnership with you. During the year, check out our three brochures and our web and social media outlets as we reflect on our history and the individuals, partners and staff who have helped us in meeting our mission to provide the programs, parks and facilities you enjoy today. Check out the latest opportunities to celebrate with us in the winter/spring edition.

*Thank you for your support and flexibility as we continue to adjust our operating procedures to ensure compliance with the recommendations from the Governor, the Virginia Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For updates on our Recreation Centers, visit us online. All County parks are open; however, please check amenity openings and closings before heading out.

Shaping Our Shores
Master Plan Update Approved

The Shaping Our Shores (SOS) Master Plan was adopted and implemented in 2009 to guide the revitalization of three of James City County’s waterfront park facilities–Chickahominy Riverfront Park, Jamestown Beach Event Park and the James City County Marina. During the 2019 update process, the plan was presented to the James City County Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee in January, to the Planning Commission in March, and to the Board of Supervisors in July, where it received unanimous approval by all three entities. To review the approved improvement maps and for more details, please visit Shaping Our Shores.
