I would like to give you an update on the progress of vaccinations in James City County.The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is the lead agency on vaccine distribution throughout Virginia. VDH has 35 health districts and our district is a combined district that includes Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, York County and James City County. We have been talking with our health district staff on a very regular basis throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. In late December, the six localities became very concerned with what appeared to be a slower distribution process than we were seeing in other parts of Virginia. We worked together to raise awareness and offer assistance. We established three vaccination clinics on the Peninsula and ours is located at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center.Our clinic opened on Jan. 22 and has vaccinated more than 3,700 employees and residents from our area. We began with public employees because we did not have indemnification for our EMS staff to provide vaccinations to the general public and we did not have the ability to properly schedule those who had registered through the VDH website. We have since obtained indemnification for our EMS staff and VDH began using their scheduling system in our clinic last Friday. They are scheduling appointments using the information from those who have registered through their website and I have heard from a few of our residents over 65 that they received an appointment in our clinic last week. However, it is important to remember that there are more than 20,000 residents in the 65 plus age group in James City County and many are waiting to schedule an appointment.Virginia is receiving 129,000 doses per week, which isn’t enough to meet the current demand. Our clinic at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center has the ability to vaccinate more than 3,000 people per day, but we have been told to expect 500 doses per week until the supply of vaccine increases.In addition to establishing a vaccination clinic, we are staffing a telephone information center. While we cannot yet schedule appointments, we can share the latest information and provide an avenue where our residents can talk with someone. As you know, the number for our information center is 877-724-1954 and I am glad that you were able to talk with someone who was knowledgeable. We have also publishing a daily news release at 4 p.m. Monday-Friday with vaccination information that can be delivered via email. More than 23% of our residents have received their first dose as compared to the statewide average of just over 12%. VDH has worked to provide multiple outlets for vaccine distribution, utilizing their clinics, the hospital systems and pharmacies. This has created a lot of confusion and while I believe most being vaccinated fall into the 1A/1B categories, they are not prioritized well in regards to age or health status.Vaccinations are not normally a local government responsibility, but I wanted to share that your elected officials, city and county staffs, and our regional partners are working hard to speed up the vaccine distribution process.
