Household Chemical Collection and Computer Recycling Event - Feb. 10

The Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA) will be collecting old cans of paint, cleaning products, computers and more at Warhill High School, 4615 Opportunity Way, on Feb. 10 from 8 a.m.-noon.

Community Classes and Volunteer Opportunities

  • The Community Animal Response Team will provide sheltering for residents and their pets at the same shelter during a disaster. Interested in volunteering? You can attend an interest meeting on Feb. 1, 7-8 p.m. at the Fire Administration Building, 5077 John Tyler Highway.
  • Social Services is hosting a free workshopUnderstanding Banking, on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Human Services Center, 5249 Olde Towne Road. Topics covered will include checking accounts, tax returns, fraud, loans, and smart ways to save and pay bills. 
  • The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) educates residents about disaster preparedness and trains participants in basic disaster response skills. The 28-hour training course for CERT participants begins in March. Details.
  • The Citizens Police Academy offers an overview of the Police Department’s philosophy and areas of police work such as traffic stops, DUI enforcement, handgun safety, shooting range, internal affairs, crime scene investigations and more. The 14-week session begins Feb. 21. Details.
  • The Police Department is also offering Firearm Safety classes in February and March, as well as a class on Safety for Faith-Based Organizations on March 5.
  • Volunteers are needed to fill vacancies on several County boards and commissions, including the Board of Building Adjustments and Appeals, the Agricultural and Forestal Districts Advisory Committee and more. Details.

New Neighborhood Forum Schedule

There will be a change to the Neighborhood Forum schedule for 2018. The Neighborhood Forum will now take place on the second Thursday of every other (odd) month. 

The next Forum will be Thursday, March 8, 6:30 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Road. Stay tuned for more details.
