Aquatics

Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations
Registration is open from Nov. 6-16 for December swim classes. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center and online. Having trouble deciding which swim level is appropriate for your child? Our certified Water Safety Instructor will be available 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13 and Wednesday, Nov. 14 to provide free swim evaluations. American Red Cross Lifeguard Re-Certification (ages 15+)

Class meets at the James City County Recreation Center on the first day. 111710-A

  • Includes First Aid and CPR certification
  • Must attend and pass a swim test on first day of class: 300-yard continuous swim (100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of choice of front crawl or breaststroke). Retrieve a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7-8 feet and return 20 yards, keeping both hands on the brick at all times, face must remain out of the water. Tread water for two minutes keeping arms out of the water.
  • Must attend every class to earn certification
  • Failure to complete competency test does not guarantee a full refund
  • Must be age 15 or older by the last day of class

Before/After School Programs

REC Connect
Need before and after school care for your child? The REC Connect program is open to youth ages 5-14, enrolled in grades K-8. One registration packet may be used for both the Before & After School 2018-2019 and Summer Camp 2019 programs. Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to postmark date and space availability. Registration forms and program information is available online (PDF) and at the Recreation Centers, Freedom Park Interpretive Center and Satellite Services Office in Toano. Get a great 60 minutes of exercise using your own body weight, bands and balls as well as our outdoor walking trail! Class ends at the My Place Playground for your tots to play. Have you ever wanted to try what many call one of the most efficient forms of exercise? Have you ever wanted to learn the proper technique of rowing?  Now is your chance! Join us for a free introduction to indoor rowing.  We’ll focus on proper rowing techniques using our indoor rowing machines (ergs).  Unlike most activities, rowing incorporates the use of your legs, core and upper body.  We’ll focus step-by-step on proper form so that you can learn and appreciate this complete full-body, low-impact, lifelong exercise.

Techniques of Meditation (ages 15+)

Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or brand new, all are welcomed to this open community meditation practice. Joint Freeing Yoga Series (ages 14+)

This series of 22 poses completed in 90 minutes is accessible to all. Based on the practices developed by Makunda Stiles, this workshop will work all the major joints gently and systematically through full and natural range of motions to enhance joint mobility and reduce pain and stiffness. The “Arc of Abilities” began in 2016 to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who do not have a Medicaid waiver. The Day Support Program provides continuing education, life skills and vocational training. In addition, clients are engaged in fitness, recreational and community service opportunities with peers, instructors and the community. Monthly tuition based on need. Join us for a nature program and guided walk on the new Living Forest Interpretive Trail! One of our expert nature guides will present the nature program then lead children and their parents on a trip through the forest to learn about plants, wildlife, insects and anything else we may encounter! The nature program will take place at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. The walks will begin at the Freedom Park playground, with a new walk starting every 30 minutes. Weather permitting.

Take Your Kid Fishing (ages 5-12) Free!

Pool Battleship! (ages 13-18) New!

Too cold for canoeing? Then why not bring the canoes inside and try out this wet and wild event! In this battle to the end, the last canoe floating takes home the championship. Teams of four attempt to sink opponents by throwing water into their opponent’s boats.  All canoes will be provided, but bring your own buckets and shields. One-Way Paddle down Powhatan Creek (ages 16+) Free! New!

Join a James River Association guide for a leisurely paddle down Powhatan Creek, taking in the historic waterway by canoe! Guides will help orient you to the vessels, provide basic paddling instruction and provide interpretation of the ecology. Bulbs as Companion Plants (ages 16+)

Learn how to use flowering bulbs in combination with perennials, annuals, ground covers and flowering shrubs to create a four-season garden. Presenter: Brent Heath, Brent and Becky’s in Gloucester. Movie Nights: Captain Underpants (PG - 2017) Free!

Bring a blanket/pillow and join us for family friendly movie nights held inside the multipurpose room. Popcorn and drinks provided. Pamper your mind, body and spirit while taking advantage of free preventive health screenings during this annual event! Learn about services for adults ages 55+ that are available in the community and get your vaccinations as well as vision, hearing, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings. Also take advantage of information provided about nutrition, home health care, pharmacies, leisure services, recreational activities and more!
