National Campus Safety Awareness Month

According to statistics provided by the RAINN website, "sexual violence on campus is pervasive."

  • 11.2% of all students experience rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation (among all graduate and undergraduate students).2
  • Female college-aged students (18-24) are 20% less likely than non-students of the same age to be a victim of rape or sexual assault.1
  • About 1 in 6 college-aged female survivors received assistance from a victim services agency.2
  • Only 20% of female student victims, age 18-24, report to law enforcement.1
  • More than 50% of college sexual assaults occur in either August, September, October, or November.4

During the month of September, please be aware of resources and general information available through the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) and the James City County Alliance on Violence Against towards preventing intimate partner violent (IPV) crimes on college campuses in the Historic Triangle area. From the OVW, this includes technical assistance, sample campus climate surveys and more.

By becoming more informed and engaged, we strengthen efforts in preventing all IPV crimes across the Historic Triangle communities.
