Aquatics
Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations
There are individual registration periods before each swim lesson session. The registration period for November classes is Nov. 2-11. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center and online at jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation. Having trouble deciding which swim level is appropriate for your child? Our certified Water Safety Instructor will be available 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9 and Thursday, Nov. 10 to provide free swim evaluations. Info: 757-259-4185.

Introduction to Riding (ages 5+)

Learn the basics of being around horses in this hands-on class. Designed to let you learn horse safety and handling from the ground up. You’ll also take your first hunting riding lesson on one of our experienced horses. 211107-A

Before/After School Programs  
The REC Connect Before/After School program is available to youth ages 5-14 enrolled in grades K-8. The program operates Monday-Friday during the Williamsburg-James City County Public School school year. Before/After School, held at all WJCC elementary school, is available 7 a.m. until school start time. After School is offered from school dismissal until 6 p.m. All middle schools combine for an After School program only at the James City County Recreation Center (transportation from the schools to the Center is provided). Want to get out of the house, do something fun, active and healthy for yourself and your child AND meet a group of amazing moms in your own town! Get a great 60 minutes of exercise using your own body weight, bands and balls as well as our outdoor walking trail! Class ends at the My Place Playground for your tots to play. Gait Analysis (all ages) Free!

Diabetes Risk Assessment Screening & Blood Pressure Check, Free!

This hands-on skills training class prepares you to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies. It also teaches the skills and knowledge needed to provide care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest through the safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Experience FUN, arts and crafts, gym games and community outings! This exciting after school club will enhance mobility, socialization and leisure skills. A typical participant:

  • Has a mild to moderate disability
  • Can independently or with verbal cues, feed, bathe and toilet
  • Is able to function successfully within a 1:3 staff to camper ratio
  • Is able to adjust to changes in routine/environment with relative ease
  • Has the ability to effectively communicate needs either verbally or with a communication device.

Buddy Beats Music Therapy (ages 5+ with disabilities)

Meet at the Freedom Park playground
Join us on the first Saturday of every month this fall for a guided walk on the new Freedom Park nature trail! One of our expert nature guides will lead children and their parents on a trip through the forest to learn about plants, wildlife, insects and anything else we may encounter! *New walks begin every 30 minutes. Women’s Mountain Bike Ride (ages 18+), Free!
Saturday, Nov. 5, 9-11 a.m.
Freedom Park
Ladies, join the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association’s Dirt Divas on a women’s-only mountain bike ride! Come learn the trail system at Freedom Park, meet fellow female riders in the community and learn the ins-and-outs of mountain biking. The ride will be at a moderate pace and will take about two hours. Participants are welcome to stay after the ride and attend the monthly EVMA meeting and luncheon. Bike and helmet required. Beginner’s Mountain Bike Ride (ages 18+), Free!

Are you new to mountain biking and looking to ride with a group? Join the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association on this beginner’s ride! The two-hour ride will be specially designed for novice riders and led by volunteers from the EVMA. Participants are welcome to stay after the ride and attend the monthly EVMA meeting and luncheon. Native Uses of Native Plants (ages 18+)

Freedom Park
Helen Hamilton, author and former high school science teacher, will talk about the food, structures and medicines used by Native Americans. She’ll explore how the native materials provided the survival needs for early settlers of eastern North America, with an emphasis on the experience at Jamestown. Offered in partnership with the Williamsburg Botanical Garden.

Celebrate our veteran’s at this spectacular museum. Fee includes motor coach transportation and lunch. Transportation departs the Recreation Center at 9 a.m.; return is anticipated by 5 p.m. Lounge membership is not required to register for trips.
