[ARCHIVED] JCC Police increase school zone speed enforcement

School Zone speed limit sign

James City County Police are increasing school zone speed enforcement over the next several weeks.  Each year, JCC Police Department receives numerous complaints regarding drivers speeding through school zones throughout the County.

In response to these complaints, a speed study was recently conducted in two local JCC school zones.  Speeds were recorded during active school zone times while the lights were activated.  The average speed at one school was 35 mph and the other was 37 mph.  The speed limit is 25 mph when the lights are activated during certain times of the day. According to the speed study, drivers are going an average of 10-12 miles per hour over the posted speed limit.  Some speeds recorded were as high as 54 mph during the speed study.

Heavy enforcement began on Oct. 17.  Since then, sixty-nine school zone summonses have been issued.  The goal of this enforcement project is to increase driver awareness of the 25 mph active school zone times so children, parents and school buses can travel safely while going to and from school.
