Did you know that Virginia is a wine destination unlike any other, with more than 230 wineries? Wineries in Virginia are surrounded by beautiful views and majestic scenery (from mountains to rivers and everything in between). There are wineries in quaint small towns and near historic sites.
The Williamsburg Winery in James City County was purchased by Patrick and Peggy Duffeler in 1983. The first vineyards were planted in 1985 and the first harvest was in 1987. The Williamsburg Winery is proud to be have the Governor’s White, which is the bestselling Virginia wine in the state.
The Williamsburg Winery has won many awards over the years. Most notably, the 2010 Adagio was the winner of the 2014 Virginia Governor’s Cup. The Gabriel Archer Reserve is also an award-winning wine. The wines of the Williamsburg Winery have won more than 200 awards and accolades over the years.
Things you may not know about the Williamsburg Winery
There are two restaurants at the winery – the Gabriel Archer Tavern and Café Provencal. Each is unique in its own right. The Gabriel Archer Tavern offers a Wine & Brine Lounge on the weekends with a variety of fresh seafood. There are lunch specials and a special Sunday brunch menu at the tavern. Wine flights are also available. Café Provencal has happy hour specials and specialty cocktails. Café Provencal serves dinner and has a unique farmer spotlight midweek dinner.
There is a boutique hotel on site – Wedmore Place. There are 28 uniquely designed rooms and suites each named after a different province in Europe. Amenities of Wedmore Place include seasonal wood-burning fireplaces, continental breakfast with imported croissants, Keurig coffee makers, antique furnishings, reading material about each room’s design and all the traditional amenities you would expect (cable TV, wireless internet, voicemail, etc.)
The Williamsburg Winery is pleased to host a variety of special events including weddings, receptions, and rehearsal dinners, parties of all kinds, community events and fundraisers. The 300 acre property has both indoor and outdoor spaces that can accommodate groups of all sizes.

The Williamsburg Winery is part of both the Williamsburg Tasting Trail and the Colonial Wine Trail. The Williamsburg Tasting Trail includes other nearby producers of mead, craft beer and spirits. The Colonial Wine Trail includes Saude Creek Vineyards (Lanexa), New Kent Winery (New Kent County), James River Cellars (Richmond) and the Williamsburg Winery.
