On Aug. 2, James City County became the first locality in Hampton Roads to air County government and school board meetings and other programming in full high-definition (HD) quality on channels 1046,1047 and 1048 on Cox Cable.
HDTV has twice the image quality of standard-definition television (SDTV), thus showing greater detail than either analog television or regular DVD. The technical standards for broadcasting HDTV also handle the 16:9 aspect ratio images thus increasing the effective image quality.
The HD channels are available to all Cox customers in James City County including those with mini-boxes. Programming will continue to be available to customers on the original standard definition channels, 46, 47 and 48.
In addition to broadcasting public meetings in higher quality, the channels will feature other HD programming including the popular HD version of Classic Arts Showcase that airs on Community Channel 46.
