[ARCHIVED] The best outdoor experiences for kids in JCC

Kid Outdoor Experiences

The summer is winding down and the kids are getting ready to go back to school. School supplies are being purchased and the carefree summer is coming to a close. Take your kids on an outdoor experience n James City County that they’ll remember as school starts!

Go Ape Treetop Junior
Go Ape’s treetop adventure courses in the County include zip lines, obstacles and a dedicated junior (kids) course. The junior course is one of only three in the country by GoApe! Reservations are recommended.

Take the kids fishing
James City County has tons of locations to fish (both boat and pier fishing), but you may also opt to take the kids to York River State Park. They will be hosting a Kids Fishing Fanatic Tournament on September 3, right before school starts. Details: www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/park-event-info?id=YR160029-05

Camping
A night filled with a campfire, fresh air and s’mores is the perfect way to end summer with a bang! Camping is available at Chickahominy Riverfront Park and makes the perfect getaway for a night or two. Chickahominy Riverfront Park has many amenities and has great views of both sunrises and sunsets.

Hiking or biking
Depending on the level of adventure your kids have, take them hiking or biking at a new place. Some suggestions for biking: Historic Jamestowne Island Loop, Virginia Capital Trail and Freedom Park. For hiking, there are a variety of trails available at both York River State Park and Freedom Park. (Freedom Park also has more than a dozen PokemonGo stops if your kids are playing!)

York River State Park programs
If your kids need a little more structure, there are a variety of ranger-led or guided programs at York River State Park. These activities vary based on the day, but there’s at least two to choose from each weekend.
