The Clean County Commission held their monthly meeting on Thursday, June 2 and is saddened by the passing of long-time Co-Chair, Will Barnes. Will went above and beyond to share his love of our natural environment by managing the Annual County-Wide Spring Cleanup, the Quarterly Clean Business Awards and all of our outreach events. Will’s commitment to this community will be greatly missed but always remembered.
Members of the Garden Club of Williamsburg joined the commission to discuss litter prevention ideas and will be collaborating on future initiatives. Commissioner Robert Marin went to a Virginia Recycling Association conference and brought back new tips and tools for community outreach including a website called litterati.org that allows individuals to sign up for free, take pictures of litter sites and add the pictures to the online landfill.
The Commission is applying to become a Keep America Beautiful affiliate, which will provide a more formal framework for litter prevention campaigns as well as grant opportunities and regional collaboration with neighboring affiliates.
The Adopt-A-Spot program is being updated and the new information will be mailed to the sponsors in the following weeks. If new individuals or organizations are interesting in the program they should contact the Environmental Coordinator.
The 3rd annual Litter and Recycling Expo is being planned for this upcoming October. The Clean County Commission and the Parks and Recreation department will be partnering for this event at Warhill Sport Complex to promote the County’s new and improved Parks recycling program.
The Clean County Commission will be attending a recycling audit in Hampton this month as a training opportunity for the Regional Recycling Contamination study.
Meetings are generally held on the first Thursday of every month. For more information contact the Environmental Coordinator at 757-259-5375 or email cleancounty@jamescitycountyva.gov.
