Looking for a fun and creative way to celebrate Halloween? Kids can use their imaginations and experiment with a variety of materials to turn their pumpkins into unique works of art. From glitter and paint to pom poms and googly eyes, the possibilities are endless. No carving involved. Please bring a medium-sized pumpkin to class. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver. $15. Ghostly Goo • Ages 4-9 NEW!

Slippery, slimy, spooky… BOO! It’s Halloween, so we’re making ghostly goo! Create customized Halloween slime, then dress up a spooky jar to keep it in. Monsters, bats, ghosts, pumpkins and more! Halloween House Decorating Workshop • Ages 6-13 NEW!

El Dias de los Muertos Spooky Crafts • Ages 9-14 NEW!

Get introduced to the basic elements of Tai Chi, designed specifically for those new to the Tai Chi movement. This comprehensive program will introduce fundamental principles and movements of this mind-body practice. The practice of Tai Chi involves various postures, weight shifting and energy patterns, with an emphasis on balance, centering and brain health. Each session will focus on specific aspect of Tai Chi, building upon what you have learned to gradually deepen your understanding and practice.

During this 1.5-hour workshop, we’ll work all the major joints gently and systematically through a full and natural range of motion to enhance joint mobility and reduce pain and stiffness. You’ll go home with practices to add to your everyday life! $8.

Frame Drumming Workshop • Ages 15+ NEW!

This two-hour lesson is jam-packed with information, instruction, technique refinement, and lots of skill-building! It’s perfect for beginners as well as recreational drummers with an interest in deepening their drumming practice. We use frame drums, but many of the lessons can be applied and transferred to other types of drums and percussion instruments. Drums provided, but if you have a frame drum, please bring it! $20.

Candy is not stealing the Halloween show this year! Get ready for our pumpkin-filled and fitness fun adventure. Gather your family and friends and join us for a lively and Halloween-themed fitness walk that will have everyone in the spirit of the season with a healthy twist. During this event, families will embark on a scenic one-mile walk through our enchanting pumpkin decorated trail. Along the way, look for entertaining fitness challenges and activities suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Dress up in your favorite Halloween-themed attire and let your creativity shine—make sure you can move your body! Lace up your walking shoes and grab your flashlight. Registration required.

Greensprings Trail Fall Photo Contest • Ages 18+ FREE!
Attention photographers! Explore the Greensprings Interpretive Trail and Powhatan Creek Trail, two of the County’s premier trails, and share your photos with us! Selected photos will be featured on the County website, social media and in the kiosk at the Greensprings Interpretive Trail trailhead, 3751 John Tyler Hwy. The contest runs through Nov. 14. Freedom Park Full Moon Hikes: Hunter’s Moon • All Ages FREE!

Come explore us AFTER DARK during the full moon! Freedom Park closes at sunset; however, Multiuse Trail 3 only reopens for this self-guided hike on select nights. After sunset, visitors may use Multiuse Trail 3 only, all other areas of the park are closed. The full moon hikes use an out-and-back one-mile, paved ADA-compliant trail winding through wooded forest and the Colby Swamp. Users must depart Multiuse Trail 3 by the closing time. No registration required. Weather permitting.

Tour one of the first Free Black Settlements in the U.S. located here in Freedom Park. Come learn historical facts, information about the land and visit the settlement’s dwellings which are historically accurate of the early 1800s. Registration not required. Meet at the Free Black Settlement area within the park. Tours take place approximately every 20-30 minutes. Weather permitting.

Spend the day underground! Self-guide through the largest and oldest natural caverns in the eastern U.S. while discovering the geological history that has created such an incredible environment. Get your glow on while playing pickleball under the blacklights! Players will compete in eight, 5-minute matches with randomized opponents. Players with the most points at the end of the eight matches will be the winner! Dress in neon and accessorize with glow items; best glow outfit wins a prize! Boo Bash at the Beach • All Ages

Jamestown Beach Event Park
Experience a day at the beach with a Halloween twist! Trick-or-treating onsite for ages 12 and younger. Costumes welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Enjoy games, crafts, live DJ music, bounce houses, food trucks ($) and lots and lots of candy! Pumpkin carving and decorating available first-come, first-served while supplies last. Kiwanis Kids Train • All Ages FREE!

The Kiwanis Kids Train is coming to Upper County Park! Offered in partnership with three local branches of the Kiwanis Club, the American style gas locomotive features a smoke system, public address system, bell, horn and three passenger cars, one is ADA accessible. Glow! Bike Ride • All Ages

Grab your bike for a glowing nighttime ride! Parks & Recreation and Girls in Gear are partnering to educate children and families on bike safety before taking off on a group bike ride. Participants are encouraged to decorate their bikes with glow elements. $5 


Michie Tavern/Monticello • Ages 55+ Exclusive

Registration closes Oct. 12 (unless trip fills). Immerse yourself in history as you dine at one of the most important Taverns in the commonwealth and enjoy a guided tour of Thomas Jefferson’s stately mansion and plantation. Cost includes lunch and admission fees. Spots available: 28. We take care of all the details - trip planning, meals, tickets, tips – and we do all the driving! The Lounge 55+, located in the James City County Recreation Center, is designed for ages 55+. Program offerings include a variety of activities, discussion groups, games, trips and luncheons.
