The James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Rd., will be closed Nov. 13-Nov. 19 for scheduled annual maintenance. While the Center is closed:Program registrations and facility reservations are still accepted:●By phone: Monday-Saturday 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. ●Online, anytime: jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation● Visit: Abram Frink Jr. Community Center, 8901 Pocahontas Trail in Grove, Monday-Thursday 4-9 p.m. and Friday 4-8 p.m.
Closure improvement projects scheduled include: ●floor refinishing of both racquetball courts, group fitness Studio 1 and the basketball courts ●continued renovations of the catering kitchen and all three locker rooms ●power washing of the pool deck ●painting in several areas ●Weather permitting, painting the front entrance and power washing and concrete replacements of sidewalk sections.
Renovations Continue The overall renovation project continues during the annual closure. Work includes demolition and restoration of the locker rooms, catering kitchen and floor work. The overall project, which began Sept. 18, is anticipated to be completed in 15 weeks. These projects are part of the County’s Capital Improvement Project program and planning for the project has been in place for several years. Specific construction dates are determined by a variety of factors and will be communicated upon our notification. The following areas are affected: ●Locker Rooms – Family, Women’s and Men’s: The locker rooms are receiving new epoxy flooring, wall tiles, partitions, benches and mirrors. The project is required to improve patron safety and upgrade and maintain the life span of the facility area. ●Catering Kitchen: The community wing is being renovated to meet all local health code requirements with new flooring, cabinets, sinks, appliances, electrical and lighting. ● Floor Work: The flooring from the community room hallways through the senior lounge area will be replaced to ensure patron safety as part of the facility upgrades.
SCHEDULED PROJECT TIMELINE ▪ Family Locker Room will serve as the Ladies/Men’s Locker room when those respective areas are closed for renovation. The family locker room is scheduled to reopen as a family locker room once renovations of the men’s and ladies’ rooms are complete. Painting in the family locker has not been completed but is scheduled to be completed during the annual maintenance shutdown. ▪ Women’s Locker Room - improvements are currently underway with an anticipated five-week completion timeline.▪ Men’s Locker Room - improvements are scheduled to begin upon completion of the Women’s Locker room renovations. Work is anticipated to be completed in five weeks upon commencing. During the renovation period, a locker room will always be open. ● Upon work completion in the Family Locker Room, the Women’s Locker Room will close. Women should use the Family Locker Room during this period. ●Upon work completion in the Women’s Locker Room, the Men’s Locker Room will close. Men should use the Family Locker Room during this period of the closure. PLEASE NOTE: Space is limited in the Family Locker Room - there are three showers and one restroom. To minimize disruption and wait times, we encourage you to come dressed to work out and shower at home when possible, during the five weeks your locker room is closed. Additional restrooms are available off the lobby and upstairs and additional lockers can be found in the gym lobby to help during this time.
PASS OPTIONS These much-needed upgrades may cause some disruption to your routine, thank you in advance for your patience. Center passholders who prefer not to use the facility during renovations can request to freeze their pass during the renovations, or can request a refund of their balance of time on their membership.
