Aquatics

We’re Hiring, Lifeguards Needed • Ages 16+ FREE!

Parks & Recreation Aquatics is hosting this open interview for Lifeguards and Basic Swim Instructors! Potential candidates can stop by the James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Road for an interview and swim test (if not already certified). Swim tests for American Red Cross Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor are conducted as part of the interview process. Successfully completing the swim test does not guarantee employment; employment is determined by successfully completing the entire course of the position including interviewing for and passing post-hiring practices conducted through the County’s Human Resources Department. Kid’s Mini Easter Eggs Workshop • Ages 7-13

Before/After School

REC Connect  
Clara Byrd Baker, J. Blaine Blayton, Matoaka, Matthew Whaley, Norge and Stonehouse REC Connect locations are currently full for the school year. Please submit a completed registration packet to be added to the waitlist. Registration packets are available for download from the REC Connect website or for pickup at the James City County Recreation Center or any payment site location. Due to low enrollments and lack of transportation resources, a Middle School Teens On Point (T.O.P) after school program is not being offered at this time. A Spring Break program, for ages 5-14, will be held Monday-Friday, April 4-8, 7 a.m.- 6 p.m., $25/day. The elementary school sites are Matoaka, Norge and Laurel Lane; the teen program site is J. Blaine Blayton Elementary School. Program details are available in the Winter/Spring Destination Recreation Activity Brochure – ages 5-10 and ages 10-14

What could be more essential than walking and running? Local sports chiropractor Dr. Daniel Shaye of Performance Chiropractic will be performing FREE gait analysis. You may learn why your knee hurts, or your back, or your hip – you may even catch injuries before they happen! Please wear shorts and a tank type shirt for the best analysis. Intro to Yoga for Teens • Ages 13-18

Have you ever wanted to try what many call “one of the most efficient forms of exercise?” Have you ever wanted to learn the proper technique of rowing? Now is your chance! Join us for a free introduction to indoor rowing using our indoor rowing machines (ergs). Unlike most activities, rowing incorporates the use of your legs, core and upper body. We’ll focus step-by-step on proper form so that you can learn and appreciate this complete full-body, low-impact, lifelong exercise.

Get introduced to the basic elements of Tai Chi. We’ll cover joint loosening exercises, breathing techniques, and other fundamental exercises. The practice of Tai Chi involves various postures, weight shifting and energy patterns, with an emphasis on balance, centering and brain health. 

Yoga for Arthritis and Joint Health • Ages 14+

Sound Meditation (Nada Yoga) • Ages 14+

Nada Yoga – the yoga of sound. This meditative practice incorporates sound with modalities such as vocal toning, singing bowls, drums and meditation on the Naad. Naad - stream of sound. We’ll use the drum and the voice as a modality to practice mindfulness. Students can learn basic drumming and meditation techniques and participate in drum circles and sound immersions to experience the use of drums and sound in ritual, ceremony and recreation. Come join us to learn about host plants for the butterflies that we all love to see fluttering around. Learn about what plants are preferred by some of our native butterflies. Plant some seeds so you can grow plants at home then take a walk to see some of the host plants that grow in Freedom Park. Join us monthly as we investigate a unique and different topic! Freedom Park Full Moon Hike: Worm Moon • All Ages FREE!

Freedom Park 
Come explore the PARK AFTER DARK during the full moon! During this self-guided hike, Freedom Park will stay open late, past sunset, on select nights. After sunset, visitors may only use Multiuse Trail 3; the full moon hikes are a walking loop that start and end along this trail which is a one-mile, paved ADA-compliant trail winding through wooded forest and the Colby Swamp. Users must depart the park by the closing time and must stay on Trail 3 after sunset. No registration required. Weather permitting.  

High Bridge Trail Trip • Ages 12+

High Bridge Trail, located in Farmville, VA, is the longest recreational bridge at 125 feet above the Appomattox River. Join us as we take in the views along this converted railroad line. Participants aged 15 & younger must be accompanied by an adult. Please pack lunch.

Six weeks of league play culminates in an end-of-season playoff game. Team captains must commit before March 20 by emailing sarah.cochrane@jamescitycountyva.gov. Players must all be listed on the team roster by signing up through PerfectMind/Xplor. A team payment of $750 will be due the first week of games.
