James City County Police Department is offering free firearm safety courses to the public in the coming months. Each one-session class will cover basic safety, handling, storage and laws related to carrying a concealed handgun in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The course does not include hands-on training, and personal firearms should be left at home in a secure location.
All courses will be held at the Law Enforcement Center at 4600 Opportunity Way.
Participants are asked to please follow CDC guidelines regarding face coverings. Participants will also be required to maintain social distancing from those not in the same household.
Pre-registration is required and must be completed online.
Dates of the one-session classes follow:
- June 8, 6:30-9 p.m.
- June 29, 6:30, 9 p.m.
- July 10, 9 a.m.-noon
- July 24, 9 a.m.-noon
- Aug. 7, 9 a.m.-noon
- Aug. 21, 9 a.m.-noon
Project ChildSafe provides free gunlocks that will be available to participants.
