[ARCHIVED] Feb. 12, 5:15 p.m. Weather Update - Significant Icing Event Possible for Area

Weather

James City County emergency officials are monitoring the potential for a significant icing event across much of Virginia through the weekend.

Stay Informed
Residents should continue to monitor the weather and local media for the latest updates. County closings and weather-related information will be posted on the County website and social media, www.facebook.com/jamescitycounty and www.twitter.com/jamescitycounty.

County residents can sign up to receive important emergency alerts, notifications and updates on their cell phones, emails and more at JCCAlert.org. Text messages charges may apply.

Road Conditions
Primary and secondary roads in the County are wet and/or slushy and as temperatures drop are expected to become icy.

During and after the storm, stay off the roads as much as possible to allow VDOT crews to treat the roadways. Be mindful of black ice. Black ice is difficult to see and makes roads very slippery, especially on bridges and overpasses. If you can’t delay your travel, then please:

  1. Know before you go by checking VDOT’s 511virginia.org for road conditions.
  2. Give yourself more time for travel.
  3. Clear all the ice and snow off your car.
  4. Slow down.
  5. Increase your following distance.
  6. Turn your headlights on.
  7. Avoid using cruise control.

Power Outages
Ice storms can cause downed power lines resulting in possible power outages. Report power outages by calling Dominion Energy at 866-366-4357 or www.dom.com. If you see downed power lines, please stay at least 30 feet away from them and call 866-366-4357 to report the location immediately.

Prepare for power outages by:

  1. Taking inventory of what you need that relies on electricity, especially for medical reasons.
  2. Charging your electronic devices ahead of time and keep extra batteries and portable chargers on hand.
  3. Checking to see that your Carbon Monoxide detectors are working and have a battery backup.

Ice storms can also cause downed tree limbs. Before an ice storm, trim weak or damaged branches around your home. Do not park your car under trees during an ice storm and do not leave your car wipers raised.
