Arts & Special Interest

DIY Arts & Crafts • Ages 5-9

Make art masterpieces out of common household items, recyclables and other unique objects! We'll use our imagination for "do-it-yourself" arts andcrafts during this fun-filled hands-on class! Dress for mess. No previous experience needed. Class fee includes all supplies. Instructor: Mary Griffith.

PeeWee Painting At-Home Kit • Ages 3-5 • New!

Let your kids get creative with this at-home kit they’re sure to enjoy. We’ll provide all the supplies – you provide the space! Kit includes 9”x12” canvas (with pre-taped elements), paints, brushes, disposable apron and instruction sheet. Please select desired painting at the time of registration including “geometric shapes,” “first initial art” or “house and yard.” You’ll be contacted via email for scheduling your kit pick-up.

Winter Wonderland Cookie Decorating • Ages 7-13 • New!

Decorate homemade cookies using buttercream icing in winter colors. We’ll decorate fun winter shapes such as snowflakes, mittens and more! Please note any food allergies at time of registration. Please bring 2 large airtight containers to class to transport home the decorated cookies!

Have you ever wondered where your family came from? Or thought about taking one of those advertised DNA genealogy test? Learn how to get started and the resources available. This class is for beginners and not ideal for individuals who have already taken “Intermediate” or “Advanced” classes. Have you ever wanted to try what many call “one of the most efficient forms of exercise?” Have you ever wanted to learn the proper technique of rowing? Now is your chance! Join us for a free introduction to indoor rowing using our indoor rowing machines (ergs). Unlike most activities, rowing incorporates the use of your legs, core and upper body. We’ll focus step-by-step on proper form so that you can learn and appreciate this complete full-body, low-impact, lifelong exercise.

Group Fitness Classes • Ages 14+

Our instructors are certified by nationally recognized organizations such as AFAA, ACE, Spinning, Zumba, Barre, SilverSneakers®, Yoga Alliance and SCOTT Pilates. Purchase a Premier Pass, Group Fitness Monthly Pass or a 10-Tab Pass for access to classes. These allow you to take any land or aqua fitness class as long as space is available (first-come, first-served). Classes are 50 minutes unless otherwise noted. Our varied schedule includes core and flexibility classes like Pilates, Yoga and PiYo. For a full body workout, we offer Low Impact, Body Sculpt, Cardio Intervals and Indoor Rowing. For more of a physical challenge, try Cardio Kickboxing, Tabata, Kettlebell, Barre, TRX, Bootcamp, Circuit Training or Indoor Cycling. You’ll find something you love! Wintergreen Ski Trip • Ages 16+ • New!

Spend the day on the slopes! This day trip includes a four-hour lift ticket and transportation to and from Wintergreen resort. Lift tickets will be valid from approximately 12:30-4:30 p.m. and then we’ll depart back to Williamsburg. All ski or snowboard gear rentals will be on your own from the resort—for pricing visit the Wintergreen Resort website. Trip is weather permitting.

New Year’s Day Park Scavenger Hunt • All Ages/Families • New! Free!

It’s a New Year and time to put 2020 behind us! Let’s celebrate the new year with some fun and friendly competition. There’ll be clocks hidden within our parks and facilities that you and your friends or family can seek out. If you find one, scan the QR to submit your entry into a raffle for a Parks & Recreation prize pack. Each code that is scanned and submitted will need to include your phone number and email in order to be eligible for prizes. Check the County’s Parks & Recreation Facebook page for more details and a listing of the parks that will be included in the hunt.

Join us in the new year for Parks & Recreation's 2021 Fitness Open House! You can reserve time slots to meet our instructors virtually, with a 15-person limit per virtual session; or, you can reserve time slots to take an in-person demo class, with a 9-person limit for in-person classes. The event is free, but you must pre-register due to limited class sizes! Register online. Anyone that registers for a virtual meet and greet class will immediately get an alert informing them of when to expect the Zoom link. It's a great time to start a healthy new routine! 2021 Hit the Reset Virtual 5K Run/Walk • All Ages

Put 2020 in the past and hit the reset! We’re racing into 2021 with positive resolutions; let’s move forward together! Join James City County Parks & Recreation for their first annual virtual 5K! You can complete this virtual 3.1 mile run/walk anywhere with anyone. Complete between Jan. 16-Feb. 20 and submit online. Race registration includes a commemorative medal and shirt. The County has some of the most beautiful trails in the state! If you choose to run your 5K on one of our trails, submit your location photo and receive an extra entry into our raffle. Registration closes on Feb. 18 at 10 p.m. Register at the RunSignup website. For more information, please call 757-259-4176.

This soccer series engages kids and helps them develop balance, movement and soccer skills as well as provides a positive sports environment. Parents are encouraged to participate in Quart’r Pint where the focus is on honing motor skills and introducing basic elements of soccer. Half Pint focuses on individual technical development and Full Pint is designed to hone those skills and introduce dynamic team play.

Jr. NBA Skills Challenge • Ages 6-13 • Free!

This nationwide program is a fun way to lace up your basketball shoes and test your skills against other local players! The competition consists of a one-minute timed drill and shots from multiple, pre-determined locations around the court. The top three participants in each age group are eligible to move on to the regional tournament and from there to an all-expense-paid trip to the skills challenge championships! Aging date for each participant is their age on 8/31/21, not their current age. Preregistration is highly recommended as spaces are limited.

Athletes Global Basketball Skills • Ages 6-14
Monday & Wednesday, Jan. 4-Feb. 10
Ages 6-10, 5:45-6:45 p.m.; Ages 11-14, 7-8 p.m.

Athletes will learn the fundamentals and foundations of basketball while building upon those skills each week. Participants will get a feel for the flow of each game while also focusing on strength and athleticism. Coaches also give out daily leadership development homework to help develop social, emotional and leadership skills.
