On Oct. 30 at approximately 1:41 a.m., officers were dispatched to the playground in Pocahontas Square in the 1900 block of Algonquin Trail in reference to a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, officers located a male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The male, identified as Carlos Fermir Vanegas-Escobar, a 17-year-old James City County resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 15-year-old JCC male has been charged with murder in connection with this incident. The male turned himself in to police at the Merrimac Center (Juvenile Detention) on Nov. 23 where he is currently being held.
The investigation is ongoing.
