James City County Police Department patrol vehicle

On Nov. 16 at approximately 9:57 a.m., James City County Police and Fire Departments responded to the 200 block of Old Cart Road. A resident reported that her neighbor (an adult, male) left a suspicious bag in her driveway. The preliminary investigation indicated that the male had a military background and may be suffering from mental health issues. He was taken into custody for evaluation.

The bag was cleared and nothing criminal was noted inside.

The male’s residence is currently being searched for items related to his military service, which may include destructive devices and/or components.

Residents in the area were contacted and instructed to shelter in place. One resident requested assistance in evacuating.

The investigation is ongoing.

Newport News Fire Department Bomb Squad and FBI are on the scene assisting with the search.
