On July 23, a member of the Hospice House’s Board of Directors provided documents to James City County Police Department indicating that an employee, Brandi Kay Godwin, had been embezzling funds from Hospice House for more than a year. After reviewing bank records, credit card statements, reconciliation reports and payroll records, investigators determined that Godwin had made numerous personal and unauthorized purchases using both a credit card and checking account belonging to Hospice House. Godwin had also written checks to herself and documented those payments as being paid to someone else. It is estimated that Godwin embezzled more than $50,000 between March 12, 2018 and July 31, 2020.
Brandi K. Godwin, 40-years-old of Hampton, is charged with three counts of felony embezzlement. She turned herself in at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail (VPRJ) on Sept. 3.
This investigation remains active.
