James City County has established park rules that permit guests to fly Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in three County parks. UAS’s are permitted in the following parks PROVIDED users follow Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines:
Chickahominy Riverfront Park, 1350 John Tyler Highway. Users must stay 25 feet from the campsites, pool and playground.
Freedom Park, 5537 Centerville Road. Users must stay 25 feet from the playground and Go Ape ziplines.
Upper County Park, 180 Leisure Road in Toano. Users must stay 25 feet from the playground and pool.
All users must operate the aircraft in a safe manner. UAS (over .55 pounds in weight) must be registered with the FAA as of Feb. 19, 2016. All UAS operators must carry registration on their person while operating aircraft in County parks. All operators must follow FAA guidelines (faa.gov/uas) on use of UAS’s.
