COVID-19 Updates and Reminders 

To assist public health officials contain the spread of COVID-19 in overlooked, under-tested, underserved and/or uninsured communities, Faith Based Leaders and the Peninsula Health Department are partnering with Sentara Healthcare in offering free testing throughout the state of Virginia.

June 27, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Chickahominy Baptist Church, 2900 Chickahominy Road

July 2, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Williamsburg House of Mercy, 10 Harrison Avenue

July 11, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Little Zion Baptist Church, 8625 Pocahontas Trail

Independence Day Closures

  • County offices will be closed on Friday, July 3 for the Independence Day holiday.
  • The James City County Recreation Center and Abram Frink Jr. Community Center will be open on July 3 and closed on July 4.
  • All County parks are open July 4; however, not all park amenities have reopened. For the latest information, visit or call 757-259-5360.
  • Convenience Centers and the Garbage Transfer Station will be open normal hours on July 3. They will be closed on July 4. Convenience Centers will reopen on July 5 and the garbage transfer station will reopen on July 6.
  • No change to curbside recycling schedule.
  • Contact the Courts directly for schedule information.

As a reminder, the possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling or use of fireworks and sparklers in James City County is a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail and/or $2,500 fine. Professional displays are allowed through a special permit issued by the Fire Marshal.

Fireworks can be turned in without penalty at any JCC fire station or by calling Fire Administration at 757-220-0626 to make arrangements with Fire Marshal staff.

Citizens are encouraged to call 911 to report the use of fireworks by others. Fire Marshal staff will conduct extra patrols on July 4 so they can respond quickly to any reports.

As part of its contribution to the economic recovery, ODU’s Strome College of Business has launched the Strome Open4Business program. Companies and non-profits can sign up to take advantage of faculty-led student projects in a wide variety of areas, such as digital marketing, selling to the government, exporting, and finance.

Parks & Recreation 
All County Park restrooms have reopened. The fishing pier at Chickahominy Riverfront Park has reopened following maintenance work. All County parks are open July 4; however, not all park amenities have reopened. For the latest information, visit or call 757-259-5360.

The James City County Recreation Center and the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center are open to regular operating hours. Reopening details and social distancing guidelines are available at At a glance, please be aware: patrons are required to wear a face covering for entry to the facility. It may be removed only when exercising on a piece of equipment or in the pool. All patrons will have their temperature taken by a contactless thermometer before entry. If your temperature is 100.4 F or higher you may not enter the facility. The Lounge, Child Watch, whirlpools, sauna, Stretching Room and basketball courts remain closed. Masks are required while using the track – 10 feet of required social distancing is not possible so there are no exceptions. Indoor Land and Outdoor Water Fitness classes begin June 29.
