County Parks, Centers & Facilities Update

November 19, 2020
 

Due to the continued impacts of COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines, some park amenities remain closed. Thank you for your support and flexibility as we adjust our operating procedures to ensure compliance with the recommendations from the Governor, the Virginia Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While the current phase carries some restrictions, most amenities have reopened but at reduced capacity. Highlights include:

Parks: 

● Playgrounds in County parks are open; however, six feet of physical distance must be maintained by all participants.
● Picnic shelters in County parks are first-come first-serve; gatherings are limited to 25 people.
● All tennis and pickleball courts, public basketball courts, volleyball courts and athletic fields are open. Ten feet of physical distance must be maintained by all participants and spectators of athletic activities.
● Competitive games can resume for most sports except football, and tournaments may be held at the Warhill Sports Complex.
● The Freedom Park Interpretive Center is open Saturday and Sunday only, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The Center meeting room is available for private rentals, not to exceed 25 people.
● All County park restrooms are open.
● Dogs must be leashed and under the complete and immediate control of their owner at all times.
● Water fountains at Chickahominy Riverfront Park and Little Creek Reservoir Park are open; all other County park fountains remain closed.

Recreation Centers
The James City County Recreation Center and the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center have resumed regular operating hours. Details and social distancing guidelines are available at https://jamescitycountyva.gov/DocumentCenter/View/24983/Center-Operations-Plan-6-15-20-PDF.

Below is an overview of changes:
●All patrons will have their temperature taken before entry. If your temperature is 100.4 F or higher you may not enter the facility.
●Patrons are required to wear a face covering for entry into the facility. It may be removed only when you are in the pool or exercising on a piece of equipment.
●Masks are required while using the track – 10 feet of required social distancing is not possible so there are no exceptions.
●A reservation system for lap swimming, water walking, family swim, aquatic fitness classes, racquetball and cardio equipment is in place. Reservations for the week will open every Sunday at 1 p.m. In addition to calling the Front Desk for a reservation, online registration is now available. Click here to sign up.
●Lap swimming and water walking is available by reservation only and is limited to a maximum of two family members per lane.
●Recreational swimming/family swim time is available by reservation only and limited to three families per hour.
●Water Fitness classes are available by reservation only. Limited classes and spaces are available. Visit water fitness classes for the list of aquatic offerings.
●Basketball shooting is available by reservation only and is limited to two (2) guests per basket per session. Participants must bring their own ball.
●Table Tennis is available by reservation only and is limited to two (2) guests per table per session. Spectators are asked to wait outside of the room while games are in progress. Participants must bring their own equipment and wear a mask.
●Racquetball is available by reservation only and is limited to two (2) guests per court. Participants must bring their own equipment.
●Group Fitness classes are available. Advance reservations are not available for these classes. Classes will operate at a limited capacity to allow for social distancing. Click here for the schedule of land classes.
●The men’s, women’s and family locker rooms are open with limited capacity. Lockers are still closed.
●The Lounge, Child Watch, whirlpools, sauna and stretching room remain closed.

Facilities
Legacy Hall is available for reservations, not to exceed 25 people, which is based on the set up of the room. For more information, call 757-259-5410.

Classes and Activities
Registration for all activities is open. The Fall 2020 Activity Brochure is available and details offerings though Dec. 31.Copies can be downloaded from our homepage at jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation or picked up at the Recreation Centers, the Satellite Services Office in Toano, Chickahominy Riverfront Park, public County offices and at the James City County and Williamsburg libraries. The Winter/Spring issue is scheduled for release the last week of December.

Park by Park Amenities
Please remember COVID-19 social distancing guidelines are still in effect:

Brickyard Landing, 990 Brickyard Road (off Forge Road) 
Open: public boat ramp

Chickahominy Riverfront Park, 1350 John Tyler Highway
Open: Campground is open for all length of camp stays. All restrooms are open. Campers can make reservations and complete other transactions by calling 757-258-5020 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. The Guest Services service window is open daily open 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily for paddlecraft rentals, the sale of ice, firewood and other transactions.

Closed: Chickahominy Riverfront Park Guest Services/Store is closed to public traffic (service window open).

Diascund Reservoir Park, 9551 Diascund Reservoir Road
Open: boating access & fishing

Freedom Park, 5537 Centerville Road
Open: mountain biking, hiking, walking, nature trail & open space, and playground. The Interpretive Center is open Saturday and Sunday only, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Patrons are required to wear a face covering for entry to the facility. The Center meeting room is available for private rentals on a daily basis (except most holidays, not to exceed 25 people).

Greensprings Interpretive Trail, 3751 John Tyler Highway
Open: ADA accessible trail, hiking, running & wildlife viewing (no bikes)

Ironbound Park, 150 Carriage Road
Open: ADA accessible walking trail, playground, basketball court

James City County Marina, 2054 Jamestown Road
Open: The James City County Marina Store is open daily, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Customers are required to wear face coverings/masks to enter the store; guest without a mask should continue to use the service window. Paddle craft and bike rentals, restrooms, showers, wildlife viewing 

James City County Recreation Center Park, 5301 Longhill Road
Open: mulituse trails for hiking, biking & jogging, playground, athletic fields

Jamestown Beach Event Park, 2205 Jamestown Road
Open: beachfront

Not Permitted
● group sports (such as volleyball, football, Frisbees, etc.) on the sandy beach
● use of tents larger than 10’x10’ or group umbrellas
● gatherings of more than 25 people

Closed:
observation pier
water fountains

Parking:
Parking is available, but limited on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once the park reaches vehicle capacity, no other vehicles are permitted in unless one leaves—there will be no pick-up or drop-off once capacity is reached.

Little Creek Reservoir Park, 180 Lakeview Drive
Open: mulituse trails for hiking, biking and jogging, boat launch & fishing, playground. The Park store is open weekends only, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. for boat rentals, boat ramp passes, concessions and other transactions.

Powhatan Creek Park and Blueway, 1831 Jamestown Road
Open: fishing, small watercraft launch & wildlife viewing

Powhatan Creek Trail, 3131 Ironbound Road
Open: mulituse trails for walking, running, cycling & wildlife viewing

Skate Park, 5301 Longhill Road
Open: Occupancy limited to 50. Ten feet of physical distance must be maintained by all participants and spectators.

Upper County Park, 180 Leisure Road/Toano
Open: Mountain biking and mulituse trails for hiking, biking and jogging & open space, playground.

Veterans Park (Kidsburg), 3793 Ironbound Road
Open: ADA accessible multiuse trails for hiking, biking & jogging, Kidsburg, pickleball courts, basketball courts, sand volleyball courts

Warhill Sports Complex, 4900 Stadium Road
Open: mulituse trails for hiking, biking and jogging, shoreline fishing & open space, playgrounds, basketball courts, athletic fields

Competitive games can resume for most sports except football, and tournaments may be held at the Warhill Sports Complex with field rentals limited to stay under the following capacities:
Sanford B. Wanner Stadium: 250
Multi-use fields: 250
Baseball fields: 250
