Winter/Spring Activity Brochure Available

Parks & Recreation can help you plan for a new year filled with opportunities to live happier and healthier! The Winter/Spring 2020 edition of Destination Recreation highlights all of the department’s offerings through May, hundreds of programs and activities to have fun and get fit. Our special events include Fido Fest for your furry friends, Half Century Senior Games for ages 50+ who enjoy sports competition, and Family Fun Night and Family Fun Fest for all ages to engage with family, friends and community. Sign up for camps and classes at the Summer Camp Fair. For those who love the outdoors, we’ve got the Park Adventure Challenge, Stargazing with NASA astronomers, Bikes Out of Hibernation and Camping Under the Stars.

Please spend a few minutes with this edition of Destination Recreation and share it with your family and friends. If you choose to participate in our programs or visit our parks, you can improve your health and sense of well-being, engage in new activities and take advantage of the many unique opportunities to play and to learn individually or as a family.

Family Health Fair • All ages Free!

James City County Recreation Center
Join The Arc of Greater Williamsburg to learn about the health benefits our community has to offer to you and your family! Enjoy activities for all ages, healthy recipes and cooking demonstrations, giveaways, nutrition workshops and Zumba and Yoga demonstrations. If you’re interested in presenting as a vendor or would like more information, please email Pam McGregor at pam.mcgregor@thearcgw.org.

Family Fun Night • All ages
February 22, 7-9:30 p.m.
James City County Recreation Center
Join us for a night of family FUN and entertainment – enjoy gym games, create various craft projects, splash in the pool, dance to tunes, play racquetball or old-fashioned board games! New this year: the inflatable pool obstacle course, face painting, FIFA 20 eSports Tournament and more. The FIFA 20 Xbox Tournament, for ages 8+, is included with your Family Fun Night entrance fee. All games will be played on Xbox and a drawing will take place to determine pools and match ups. All players must arrive and enter by 7:15 p.m. Preregistration is encouraged but not required. Park Adventure Challenge • All ages
Saturday, March 7, 1-3 p.m.
$20/person
Freedom Park
Join us for our first annual Park Adventure Challenge! Lace up your fastest shoes and bring your thinking caps for this play on the "Amazing Race." Race against other teams to find clues, complete challenges, and get pass roadblocks which are hidden throughout the park. You may be tested physically and mentally throughout the challenge so be prepared! Top finishers will receive prizes. Register under your team captain’s name by Feb. 28. Maximum number of players per team is four - have more? Sign up two teams! 812724-A.

Fido Fest • All ages
Saturday, March 21, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Admission: $5/car (cash or check only)
Jamestown Beach Event Park
Don’t miss the PAW-TY! Grab your leash and get to the park with your furry friend for a great time! Family and dog-friendly activities, games, contests, fabulous food ($) and more awaits you! Merchandise ($) and community vendors will also be present. Co-sponsor: Heritage Humane Society. Weather permitting.

Bikes Out of Hibernation • All ages Free!
Saturday, April 18, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Chickahominy Riverfront Park
Looking for an opportunity to get your bicycle out of “hibernation?” From beginner to a “little rusty,” this is the event for you! Free safety inspections, assistance for minor repairs and tire-pumping to get your bike ready for spring! After getting your bike checked out, ride as far as you like on the adjacent Virginia Capital Trail! Riders under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Free helmets while supplies last! New for 2020 - Bike Rodeo Skills for children (grades K-5)! Light refreshments provided. Weather permitting; in the event of rain, visit wabonline.org or call the Activities Hotline at 757-259-3232. Summer Camp Fair • All ages Free!

Want to sign-up the kids for summer camp? Looking for something NEW this year? Attend the 7th Annual Summer Camp Fair to learn about great camps and register your kids at the same time! Goodie bags for first 200 guests! Camps include: day (full-time and part-time) and overnight camps; sports, adventure, scouting; dance, music, arts & theater; vacation bible schools, special needs; academics – science, foreign language, history; and preschool to high school camps and more! Half Century Senior Games • Ages 50+
Friday, May 1 & Saturday, May 2
James City County Recreation Center
Join us for James City County’s Senior Games! This event caters to adults aged 50 or better who enjoy a bit of competition and staying active. Events include pickleball, a 5K race and racquetball! There’ll be sections for men’s and women’s as well as amateur and master divisions. Pickleball will take place Friday, May 1 and the 5K race and racquetball will take place on Saturday, May 2. Family Fun Fest  • All ages

Enjoy petting animals, hands-on activities, inflatable rides, family entertainment with music and contests too! “Touch-a-Truck” is back for all ages! Stop by the “Good for You Zone” and see why being healthy can lead to loads of fun. Oh, and be sure to participate in the Fun Run! Grab some lunch provided by the food vendors and visit all of the local craft and business vendors! Weather permitting.
