On Dec. 29 at approximately 11:13 p.m., a single-vehicle crash occurred
in the 7800 block of Richmond Road between Chickahominy Road and School Lane.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Scott Allen McKinney, 46 of Lancaster
was driving a Cox work van west on Richmond Road when the vehicle went off the
right side of the roadway striking two utility poles. This caused the roadway to
be closed due to downed lines. McKinney was wearing his seatbelt at the time of
the crash and was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News
where he was treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.
McKinney was charged with driving under the influence of
alcohol, refusal and reckless driving. He is currently being held at the
Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail on a $2,500 secured bond. Media seeking an
arrest photo should contact the VPRJ.
Per Dominion Energy, Richmond Road is not expected to reopen
until this afternoon. VDOT is also on scene and has provided some signage;
however drivers are encouraged to avoid this area if possible.
The traffic crash remains under investigation.
