The James City County (JCC) Board of Supervisors and Economic Development Authority recognized Bryant Contracting, Inc. (Bryant) as this year’s recipient of the Captain John Smith Award during the 26th annual Celebration of Business. This award is presented each year by the County’s economic development team to a business, organization or individual for exemplary contributions in the County.

Bryant was founded by Barry Bryant in 1984. Bryant specializes in heavy highway construction particularly in numerous types of bridges including timber, cast-in-place concrete, pre-cast concrete, steel truss and steel beam bridges. The firm self-performs all phases of heavy construction including demolition, pile driving, sheeting and shoring, steel and pre-cast concrete erection and concrete construction.

Bryant was a subcontractor on the segment one expansion of the I-64 Widening Project and they are now working on the third segment including expanding the Queens Creek Bridge near exit 238 and three other bridges on this segment of the project. Bryant is also working on a 1,700 foot bridge in Newport News (Atkinson Way) that is a $50M project. In the last 10 years, they have completed projects in Isle of Wight, Essex County, the City of Norfolk, Fredericksburg and other localities.

In the last five years, Bryant has invested more than $5.4 million in new buildings at their Toano location. Bryant’s success is rooted in the quality of their work and the quality of their employees.  They believe that a proactive, partnering atmosphere is essential to a project’s success. Bryant attributes their long history of completing projects on or ahead of schedule to this spirit of cooperation.

“We are so grateful for the support we have received from James City County and we are pleased to be located in downtown Toano,” said Barry Bryant, owner of Bryant.

The Celebration of Business is an appreciation event for existing companies in JCC. The event was held on Nov. 14, 2019 at the Williamsburg Winery. Previous winners of the Captain John Smith award include Anheuser-Busch, Ball Corporation, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Coresix Precision Glass, La Tienda, Kingsmill Resort, Williamsburg Landing and the Williamsburg Winery.
