[ARCHIVED] Share Your Vision on Shaping Our Shores

SOS News Flash

The Shaping Our Shores (SOS) Master Plan was adopted in 2009 to guide the development of three of James City County’s waterfront park facilities – Chickahominy Riverfront Park, Jamestown Beach Event Park and the James City County Marina. These waterfront parks have become celebrated treasures to James City County and its citizens and the update of the Master Plan is to maintain the facilities and to keep them viable in serving the needs of our community. Learn more about the SOS Master Plan update process on our website, which includes park maps, park improvements, accomplishments and the full list of proposed changes at each facility.

Share your vision with us. Get Involved, we need your help!
Attend a community meetings at the James City County Recreation Center (5301 Longhill Road) on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. or Monday, Nov. 25 at 6:30 p.m. If you’re unable to attend a community meeting, please complete the online survey. You can also email, write, call or visit us with your responses to the following questions:

  1. What amenities should be added and/or considered in these three parks? If any, why?
  2. What amenities and/or features should be removed? If any, why?
  3. Any additional comments on these three waterfront parks?
  4. Are you a resident of James City County, Williamsburg or York County? If not, in which other locality do you live?

Email us at parks.rec@jamescitycountyva.gov, call Carla Brittle, Shaping Our Shores Project Manager, at 757-259-4171, stop by the James City County Recreation Center “Listening Board” and complete a printed copy of the survey or write us at:

SOSBoardFlashWhy Update the Plan Now?
Based on the addition of new amenities and the age of the existing SOS Master Plan, James City County must ensure our waterfront parks continue to comply with County planning and environmental requirements, address community needs, enhance revenue opportunities and complement existing infrastructure and the surrounding community. In addition, James City County is undergoing its County-wide Master Plan update process, which will incorporate the citizen needs solicited in the SOS update process.

Please take a moment and review the improvements, challenges and proposals for each park. Each park map provides a conceptual layout to guide future growth and is adaptable to change. Please note that elements in the maps are not drawn to scale nor located in their exact future position. Specifics such as those will be determined in the future by available funding and will be determined in the field while the required site plans are being drafted.

The SOS Master Plan update will provide staff, elected officials and citizens with a valuable planning tool to guide the development of waterfront park facilities over the next 10 years and beyond. Improvements will be completed based on community and citizen needs as well as available funding.
