James City County Parks & Recreation is offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course for ages 15+. The next session will be held Nov. 8-14 at the James City County Recreation Center. Students must attend every class to earn certification:
Friday, Nov. 8, 4-6 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 9, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Monday-Thursday, Nov. 11-14, 4-9 p.m.
The course includes First Aid and CPR certification. Must attend and pass a swim test (held the first day of class) which requires:
* Performing a 300-yard continuous swim (100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of choice of front crawl or breaststroke)
* Retrieving a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7-8 feet and return 20 yards, keeping both hands on the brick at all times and face must remain out of the water.
* Treading water for two minutes keeping arms out of the water.
Failure to complete the competency test does not guarantee a full refund. Must turn age 15 or older by the last class. $205 fee includes lifeguard book, pocket mask and certification; registration code is 111710-A. Lifeguards are also needed at the Recreation Center indoor pool! We offer competitive pay, a flexible work schedule up to 28 hours per week, paid recertifications and a free Recreation Center membership.
