On Aug. 23, James City County Police Department hosted its annual Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) Annual Appreciation Dinner. During the event, Chief Brad Rinehimer presented Sharon Abney and Kevin Renee DeVerell with the VIPS Volunteer of the Year awards.

Sharon Abney is a senior member of our VIPS and has distinguished herself among all of our other fantastic members. She is ever dependable, always displays a “here-to-help” attitude and is consistently upbeat and enthusiastic. Sharon is experienced and skilled with working the Law Enforcement Center front desk, providing fingerprint services, helping with Child ID events, displaying the monster truck, portraying McGruff and helping with our Department’s many other programs and services. Sharon makes use of her experiences here with the Police Department and from her other experiences in public service to provide VIPS leadership and ideas for program improvement.

Kevin Renee DeVerell’s efforts and time spent towards proving exceptional public service to our citizens is without equal. She epitomizes the County values and says “yes” to any assignment requested of her. Regardless of the task, she accepts it with enthusiasm and excitement. She tirelessly assists at many events as well as assists at the Law Enforcement Center with front desk and administrative tasks.

Both Sharon Abney and Kevin Renee DeVerell are committed members of the Department and continue to demonstrate each of the County values of Integrity, Collaboration, Excellence, Stewardship and Civility, and that is why they have both been named VIPS Volunteer of the Year.

For any questions regarding the VIPS program, contact Sgt. John LeClaire at 757-259-5174 or john.leclaire@jamescitycountyva.gov.
