Enjoy a special evening walking tour, “The Burning of Jamestown” to commemorate Bacon’s Rebellion on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. During this special evening walking tour, guests will be led through the colonial town site and see the dramatic events unfold through the eyewitness account of Thomas Matthew, a Burgess in 1676. Controlled fires re-create the burning of Jamestown as it occurred on September 19, 1676.
Living history programs during the weekend will highlight the actions of key events of the rebellion led by Nathaniel Bacon.
The evening event begins at the Tercentennial Monument. This event is included with admission to Historic Jamestowne. On the day of the tour, the Visitor Center and entry gates will remain open until 7 p.m.
If you are unable to attend this special evening event, there are special walking tours scheduled on Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21 at 3:30 p.m. The walking tours are included with admission to Historic Jamestowne.
History
Bacon’s Rebellion occurred in 1676 and was led by Nathaniel Bacon against Governor William Berkeley. During Bacon’s Rebellion, more than 1,000 citizens rebelled and chased Governor Berkeley from Jamestown Island. The capital of the colony, Jamestown, was then torched on September 19, 1676. This was the first uprising of the Colonial Era. Historians vary on what Bacon’s motivation was to rebel against Governor Berkeley.
