On May 7, VHB’s Williamsburg office received a national recognition award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) at the 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in Washington, D.C. for the Carter’s Grove Plantation project. In February, VHB had been recognized with an honor award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia (ACEC Virginia) for the Carter’s Grove Plantation project at the ACEC Virginia’s 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards Gala.
VHB teamed with local partners David A. Nice Builders, Inc. and Cox Powell Corporation along with Kirby Perkins Construction for the Carter’s Grove project that won in the Survey, Mapping, Special Projects category.
Built in 1755, Carter’s Grove, which is located in James City County, endured two wars and nearly fell into disarray until Samuel M. Mencoff, a Chicago businessman, purchased the property with the goal to restore and preserve the 486-acre historic landmark for future generations. VHB developed a master plan and led the design of more than 15 projects, ranging from small- to large-scale with sustainable design elements and innovation in every step of the project. VHB improved one mile of internal roads and added a sophisticated storm drain system and stormwater management to efficiently handle runoff. Through natural channel design principles, VHB blended these parts of the restoration with the property’s natural beauty. Lastly, VHB used drones to generate high-resolution videos and topography, which were later used to generate 3-D models of the entire property.
VHB is a consulting engineering firm comprised of engineers, scientists, planners and designers who partner with clients in the transportation, real estate, institutional and energy industries, as well as federal, state and local governments. VHB has 30 locations along the East Coast including Williamsburg, which opened in 1990 in the Busch Corporate Center. With 40 employees in Williamsburg, VHB has additional Virginia locations in Richmond, Vienna (Tysons), and Virginia Beach.
