An estimated $16 billion was stolen from 15.4 million U.S. consumers in 2016 in incidents involving identity theft according to the 2017 Identity Fraud Study released by Javelin Strategy & Research. One of the most successful ways of preventing identity theft is by shredding documents that contain personal information thieves use. Join James City County Police Department for a Shred-A-Thon on May 4 at the Williamsburg/James City County Courthouse at 5201 Monticello Avenue, Williamsburg, 8:30-11:30 a.m. or when the truck is full.The first grocery bag of documents will be shredded at no charge and each additional bag will be $5. Citizens are invited to bring up to 10 paper or plastic grocery bags or 5 file boxes of documents to be shredded. Computer disks, binders, laminated paper and other non-paper materials should be removed from boxes prior to the event. Staples, rubber bands and paper clips do not need to be removed. The event is set up like a drive-thru with stop and go service; volunteers will be available to assist with unloading boxes.Please note that shredding may not be completed on-site.Due to the popularity of this event, please be prepared for the possibility of long lines and wait times.Proceeds from the Shred-A-Thon will support the Department’s annual Shop with a Cop event and other community outreach and crime prevention programs. Shop with a Cop is a program assisting underprivileged children and families during the holidays in James City County.
