Aquatics

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course (ages 15+)
Friday, Feb. 1, 4-6 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 2, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. & Monday-Thursday, Feb. 4-7, 4-9 p.m.
James City County Recreation Center & Eastern State Hospital
$210/session; $205 for JC/W residents (includes swim test, book and materials)
Class meets at the James City County Recreation Center on the first day

  • Includes First Aid and CPR certification
  • Must attend and pass a swim test on first day of class: 300-yard continuous swim (100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of choice of front crawl or breaststroke). Retrieve a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7-8 feet and return 20 yards, keeping both hands on the brick at all times; face must remain out of the water. Tread water for two minutes keeping arms out of the water.
  • Must attend every class to earn certification
  • Failure to complete competency test does not guarantee a full refund
  • Must be age 15 or older by the last day of class

Preschool Chocolate Workshop (ages 3-5)
Saturday, Feb. 2, 10-11:30 a.m.

Create tasty masterpieces with your little ones. Get introduced to basic chocolate making techniques. Dip pretzels and marshmallows and make chocolate clusters and other fun treats! Kid’s Valentine Cupcake Decorating (ages 6-13)

Get introduced to basic cake decorating skills using buttercream icing. Decorate cupcakes in Valentine style - we’ll even use edible glitter and sprinkles. STEM Club: Engineering and Robotics (ages 7-12)

The Good, the Bad, and the Bugly In Your Garden (ages 16+)
Saturday, Feb.16, 10-11:30 a.m.
Freedom Park Interpretive Center
Dr. Shawn Dash, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Hampton University, will show why insects are necessary for a healthy garden. Learn which bugs are friends and which ones are not. Before/After School, Camps

REC Connect
Need to sign up for Before/After School programs? The REC Connect program is open to youth ages 5-14, enrolled in grades K-8. One registration packet may be used for both the Before & After School 2018-2019 and Summer Camp 2019 programs. Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to postmark date and space availability. Registration forms and program information is available online and at the Recreation Centers, Freedom Park Interpretive Center and Satellite Services Office in Toano. Weekly registration fees apply. While interacting with the book’s characters and plot, Storybook Yoga helps children contemplate meaningful messages such as gratitude, peace, self-love, respect and confidence. R.A.D. Basic Physical Defense (ages 14+) Free!

The R.A.D. system (Rape Aggression Defense) is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. This comprehensive, (5 days) for women begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance then progresses on to the basics of hands-on defense training. Movie Nights: Groundhog Day (PG - 1993) Free!

Bring a blanket/pillow and join us for family friendly movie nights held inside the multipurpose room. Popcorn and drinks provided. Jr. NBA Skills Challenge (ages 6-13) Free!

This nationwide program is a fun way to lace up the basketball shoes and test your skills against other local players! The competition consists of a one minute timed drill and shots from multiple, pre-determined locations around the court. The top three participants in each age group are eligible to move on to the regional tournament and from there to an all-expense paid trip to the skills challenge championships! Aging date for each participant is their age on Aug. 31, 2019, not their current age. *Preregistration is highly recommended as spaces are limited.

Black Settlement Presentation & Book Signing, Free!

Join Col. Lafayette Jones Jr., a descendent of those that lived on the Free Black Settlement at Freedom Park, for a presentation and book signing.You’ll experience 18th century life more than 60 years before the Emancipation Proclamation.

Recreational soccer with a focus on fun. League play culminates in an end-of-season playoff to decide the champion. Register your team under the Captain’s name.
