Tasha’s Own has located to a new historical farm property in Toano that was built in 1889. The property was originally built by H. U. Stephenson, one of historic Toano’s leading citizens. Maureen Anderson founded Tasha’s Own in 2004. Anderson is skilled in many areas of homesteading and agriculture. She has 35 years of experience with livestock and herbal medicines. Anderson also hosts a local radio show, “The Mother Vine,” about farming and agriculture.

Tasha’s Own is known for their premium goat-milk soaps that are handcrafted in a variety of scents. The goat soaps are sold locally across Hampton Roads in shops and at farmer’s markets and also across northern parts of the East Coast. Additionally, Tasha’s Own produces a variety of healing salves, lotions and lip balms.

The new location will allow for classes to be held on the property. Anderson has taught a variety of homesteading classes locally. The first class will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20 from noon until 4 p.m.

“This class is an intensive lesson in many of the lost arts and other skills needed to run a small holding,” stated Anderson.

Participants will learn how to make two different kinds of raw milk cheeses, wool spinning, creating healing salves and lotions, beekeeping and also candle dipping from wax from the hives.

Anderson will expand her operations including her class schedule and her herd of animals that currently includes 30 goats and sheep, 50 hens and ten beehives. She plans to add additional varieties of sheep and more goats.
