Historical Commission Seeks New Member Applications

Historical Commission

The James City County Historical Commission is currently seeking applications for new members. The Historical Commission was established by the Board of Supervisors on July 8, 1985, to document, commemorate, preserve, and promote public interest in the history and historic legacy of the County. As part of that effort, the Commission works to increase public awareness of the County’s history by conducting and encouraging activities at all educational levels that will stimulate interest in the County’s history.

Since its inception, the Commission has worked on a number of different projects including the acquisition and restoration of the Norge Depot, an architectural survey of several sites around the County and sponsored an archaeological survey of the County. The Commission is currently working on a number of projects and initiatives including additional historic and architectural site surveys, creating new Historical Highway Markers, and a number of public engagement projects.

Members of the Commission are appointed by the Board of Supervisors for three-year terms. All interested members of the community are encouraged to apply here. Completed applications are due Wednesday, October 31. For any questions, please contact the Planning Division at 757-253-6685 or planning@jamescitycountyva.gov.
