[ARCHIVED] News Release #9, 11 a.m. - Emergency Operations Center Partially Activated

Alert

Latest News

  • The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is partially activated as County officials continue to monitor the track of Hurricane Florence and assess its possible impacts on James City County. The Citizen Inquiry Line will be active from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday. For additional questions, call 757-564-2140.
  • We encourage County residents to also check local media and weather reports throughout the weekend regarding the status of Florence. As the effects reach our area, remember to use headlights while driving in the rain and be cautious of standing water in roadways.
  • The effects of the storm are expected to be more severe in the southern portions of our news coverage area. However, recent forecasts for our area did not warrant the opening of a County shelter. We urge residents not to shelter at The College of William & Mary, as it is intended for mandatory evacuees from coastal areas in Virginia and North Carolina. Instead, it is recommended that residents who choose to leave should first go to their family or friends for shelter.
  • Residents with grinder pumps in their homes should keep in mind that grinder pumps are powered by electricity and will not function during a power outage. In order to prevent waste from backing up, severely limit the interior use of water until power is restored. Do not use the shower, wash dishes or clothes, and limit flushing the toilet. Grinder pumps store, grind and pump wastewater under pressure to a central sewer. A grinder pump is a pump unit located in your yard where the wastewater drains from the house. The pump grinds the wastewater up and pumps it to the nearest sewer in the public street.
