Free Black Settlement Presentation on Sept. 22

Black Presentation Flash

Did you know that James City County is home to one of the first settlements in Virginia created for freed slaves? Come learn more about our local African-American history by joining Colonel Lafayette Jones Jr., a descendant of those who lived on the Free Black Settlement at Freedom Park. Col. Jones will discuss the people who lived there between 1803-1850, offering a glimpse of 18th-century life in the County more than 60 years before the Emancipation Proclamation.

This free presentation, suitable for all ages, is set for Saturday, Sept. 22 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center, 5537 Centerville Road. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Col. Jones will also sign copies of his book, “My Great, Great, Grandfather’s Journey to an Island of Freedom in the Middle of Slavery.”

Col. Jones is a two-time recipient of the prestigious James City County Historical Preservation Award. He also assisted with the formulation of African-American programs for Jamestown’s 400th Anniversary in 2007.
