Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations
There are individual registration periods before each swim lesson session. Registration for September/October classes is open until Sept. 7. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center and online at Aquatics. Having trouble deciding which level is appropriate for your child? Our certified water safety instructor staff will be available from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4 and Wednesday, Sept. 5 to provide free swim evaluations. Classes held at the James City County Recreation Center. Info: 757-259-4185.

Before/After School, Camps

REC Connect
Need to sign up for the fall Before/After School programs? The REC Connect program is open to youth ages 5-14, enrolled in grades K-8. One registration packet may be used for both the Before & After School 2018-2019  and Summer Camp 2019 programs. Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to postmark date and space availability. Registration forms and program information is available online and at the Recreation Centers, Freedom Park Interpretive Center and Satellite Services Office in Toano. Weekly registration fees apply. Art Classes

Kidz Clay (ages 9-15)
Mondays, Sept.10-Oct. 15 (no class Oct. 8), 4:15-5:15 p.m.

Make a mess, make some art, and make your clay! We’ll hand build and explore the potter’s wheel. A variety of topics will be presented, so students may repeat the class. Want to get out of the house, do something fun, active and healthy for yourself and your child and meet a group of amazing moms in your own town?! Get a great 60 minutes of exercise using your own body weight, bands and balls as well as our outdoor walking trail! Class ends at the My Place Playground for your tots to play. Yoga for Hip and Spinal Rejuvenation (ages 18+)
Thursdays, Sept. 6-Oct. 11, 2-3 p.m.

This is an alignment based practice for all levels of experience. We’ll take you through a 6-week workshop to promote hip and spinal health by undoing the daily stressors on your spine and hips brought on by repetitive movement, tension, inactivity, injury or surgery. Stroke Awareness & Blood Pressure Check, Free!

Spinal Injury Avoidance & Postural Improvement Workshop (ages 18+) Free!

Day Support Program (ages 18+)
Tuesdays-Fridays weekly, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Abram Frink Jr. Community Center
The “Arc of Abilities” began in 2016 to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who do not have a Medicaid waiver. The Day Support Program provides continuing education, life skills and vocational training. In addition, clients are engaged in fitness, recreational and community service opportunities with peers, instructors and the community. Monthly tuition based on need. Info: The Arc at 757-229-3535.

Forest Explorers Walk & Talk (all ages) Free!

Freedom Park
Join us for a nature program and guided walk on the new Living Forest Interpretive Trail! One of our expert nature guides will present a nature program, then lead children and their parents on a trip through the forest to learn about plants, wildlife, insects and anything else we may encounter! The nature program will take place at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. The walks will begin at the Freedom Park playground, with a new walk starting every 30 minutes. Weather permitting.

Freedom Park Night Hikes (all ages) Free!

Come experience the sights and sounds of Freedom Park after dark! Free! New! Join James City County Parks staff on a guided nature walk through the park as the sun sets, and get a chance to see some of the nocturnal wildlife that roam the park! Kayak historic Powhatan Creek beside Jamestown Island. View and learn about birds and wildlife native to our area. Kayaks provided free, and trips are guided by James River Association. 16-person limit; must be 16 or older. The Tiny Wildlife in Your Garden; Insects on Your Side (ages 18+)

Dr. Shawn Dash, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Hampton University, will convince you to pay more attention to the insects in your garden. His enthusiasm and passion for nature will provide a most interesting program. For more information, email  Shawn at Offered by the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. Following the program, Master Gardeners will be available in the Williamsburg Botanical Garden to discuss what’s in bloom. A $5 donation to help the garden grow is appreciated.

Bring a blanket/pillow and join us for family friendly movie nights held inside the multipurpose room. Popcorn and drinks provided. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Drool in the Pool

Harvest Festival & Scarecrow Stuffing

James RiverFest (all ages)
Saturday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Jamestown Beach Event Park
Family-oriented and environmentally focused, James RiverFest is an event celebrating and building advocacy for the James River, a major tributary to the Chesapeake Bay, and its environmental and cultural significance to our region. Hands-on educational activities for children, interpretive paddles hosted by the James River Association, a live archaeology dig and opportunities to reduce waste and improve water quality through innovative designs. Weather permitting.


Teen Tournaments (boys and girls ages 12-19) Free!

Come out for weekly Xbox game tournaments and competitive active game tournaments. These safe, free and fun nights challenge you to play in competitive tournaments against other gamers in your age group. Info: 757-887-5810.
