[ARCHIVED] JCC Releases 2017 Annual Report on the Floodplain Management Plan

James City County has released the 2017 Annual Report on the Floodplain Management Plan. The Annual Report highlights the progress made by the County towards the identification, reduction and mitigation of flood losses. The Floodplain Management Plan and the Annual Report are required by National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System.

James City County’s Floodplain Management Plan is part of the Hampton Roads Hazard Mitigation Plan 2017 Update. This updated plan, which is a revision of the 2011 version, was adopted by the James City County Board of Supervisors on March 14, 2017.

The Plan identifies the region’s risk from potential hazards such as hurricanes, tornadoes and flooding. It identifies potential mitigation efforts that localities can implement to minimize losses associated with these hazards.

Accomplishments highlighted in the Annual Report include:

  • The County obtained StormReady designation in January 2018. StormReady helps communities improve communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property before, during and after an event.
  • Plans for the development of a Flood Mitigation Grant program for implementation of small scale flood mitigation projects. Priority will be given to repetitively flooded properties. The program will be initiated in the summer of 2018.
