traffic incident web

James City County Police were dispatched to a call in the 7700 block of Newman Road at 12:50 p.m. today, March 2, regarding a tree that had fallen on a vehicle.

A Ford truck and trailer belonging to Bones Tile was heading south on Newman Road when strong winds caused a large oak tree to fall on the truck. The driver of the vehicle, and owner of the company, was trapped in the vehicle for more than 2 hours while James City County and York County Fire Departments worked to safely extricate him. He was transported to VCU Medical Center in Richmond with serious injuries.

The passenger in the vehicle, 44 year-old Shawn Gregory Walker of Poquoson, was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Newman Road remains closed and will be closed for a few more hours while Dominion Energy and VDOT work to repair power lines and clear the roadway.
