This morning at approximately 9:45 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 7-Eleven at 8185 in reference to an assault. Witnesses reported that a male was being assaulted outside of the store. The offender, later identified as Terrence Levi Culley, a 31-year-old Gloucester resident, reportedly approached the victim and, without provocation, began punching him. Culley knocked the victim to the ground and, as the victim fought back, Culley took out a box cutter and began slashing at the victim. While the victim was not cut by the box cutter, his clothing was slashed. Culley fled the scene in black pickup truck. Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop; however, he refused to stop. The victim, a 30-year-old James City County resident, sustained a black eye, bruising and lacerations and was transported by medics to a local hospital.Approximately 15 minutes later, officers located the suspect vehicle at the Shell at 7340 Richmond Road. Culley was taken into custody without incident. He is charged with maiming and evade and elude. This incident appears to be random since the victim and suspect do not know each other. When the suspect was taken into custody, he indicated that his reason for attacking the victim was because “he was wearing a vest.”Culley is being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail without bond.Media contact:Stephanie Williams, Police SpokespersonStephanie.email@example.com; 757-592-5618Media should contact VPRJ for a mugshot.
