At approximately 1 a.m. on May 27, James City County Police responded to the intersection of Rt. 199 and John Tyler Highway in reference to a pedestrian who had been hit by a motor vehicle. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 55-year-old JCC man was hit by a Freightliner 18-wheeler truck heading east on Rt. 199 as the victim was attempting to cross Rt. 199 on foot toward the Williamsburg Crossing Shopping Center. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, a 58-year-old Virginia Beach man indicated that he did not see the victim until it was too late. No charges have been filed against the driver. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor with the victim. The victim’s identity is not being released at this time pending notification of his next-of-kin. Rt. 199 east at John Tyler Highway remained closed for four hours while the crash was being investigated. The crash remains under investigation.
