[ARCHIVED] Burn Ban in Effect

4 p.m. Burn Ban.png

What is the 4 p.m. burn restriction?

  • Open burning which is within 300 feet of woods or grass which could carry the fire to the woods is banned before 4 p.m. Otherwise permissible open air burning is only allowed between the times of 4 p.m. and midnight. All other open burning regulations still apply.

When is the burn ban in effect?

  • It begins on Feb. 15 and continues to April 30.

Why is this law in effect?

  • Virginia sees an increase in forest fires this time of year. Dry materials, low humidity and increased winds during this time contribute to the elevated risk of forest fires.

Why 4 p.m.?

  • After 4 p.m. the winds usually calm down and the relative humidity increases.

Does this include campfires or recreational fires?

  • Yes, campfires or recreational fires are considered open burning. Fires which are in approved containers AND covered by a ¼ inch metal screen or fires in commercially available chimineas or similar devices may be used if they are complete and in good condition to prevent the spread of fires to the surrounding area. The fire has to be attended at all times, until it is cold.

Can I use my gas or charcoal grill?

  • Yes, but you still must take proper care to keep combustible/flammable materials away from the device. The grill must be attended at all times while it is burning.
