Fitness Open House (all ages), Free!

Saturday, Jan. 21, 9-11 a.m.

Now is the time! It’s a New Year, time to start new healthy habits! Land and aquatic instructors will be available to discuss their classes, formats and typical modifications with you in a personal setting. Participate in mini-classes throughout the morning. Aquatics

Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations
There are individual registration periods before each swim lesson session. Registration for February classes is Feb. 1-10. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center and online at jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation. Having trouble deciding which swim level is appropriate for your child? Our certified Water Safety Instructor will be available 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7 and Wednesday, Feb. 8 to provide free swim evaluations. Info: 757-259-4185.


American Red Cross Lifeguard Re-Certification (ages 15+)
Saturday, Jan. 14, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
$60; $55 for JC/W residents; does not include course materials

• Renew your Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for professional rescuers certifications
• Successfully complete the prerequisite skills, practical skills, first aid skills and written tests
• Failure to complete all requirements does not guarantee a full refund

Learn, Build, Program…in this hands-on class series! Develop critical STEM and problem solving skills! You’ll build different K.Nex® bridges based on bridge designs from around the world and complete LEGO® Robotics projects, building and programming robots for sound and motion. Aviation Winter Camp (ages 9-13)

Want to learn about flying a plane? Get introduced to aerodynamics, airplane controls, design and more! Camp features a trip to the airport to experience the cockpit of a Cessna airplane, a visit to an aerospace museum and a rocket building contest. Red Cross Babysitting Course (ages 12+)

Learn all the basics of babysitting – childcare, fire and home safety, and first aid-plus learn how to set up your business. Receive a babysitter’s textbook, babysitting certificate and first aid kit. Bring a bagged lunch. 601010-A

Pruning: Winter Tree Care (ages 18+)
Saturday, Jan. 21, 10-11:30 a.m.
Freedom Park
James City County/Williamsburg Master Gardeners will discuss the basics of pruning trees and shrubs and will demonstrate the proper use of pruning tools. Email Barb Landa at barb@landa.org for more information. Free; however, a $5 donation is suggested.

Before/After School Program 

The REC Connect Before/After School program is available to youth ages 5-14 enrolled in grades K-8. The program operates Monday-Friday during the Williamsburg-James City County Public School school year. Before School, held at all WJCC elementary school, is available 7 a.m. until school start time. After School is offered from school dismissal until 6 p.m. All middle schools combine for an After School program at the James City County Recreation Center (transportation from the schools to the Center is provided). Want to get out of the house, do something fun, active and healthy for yourself and your child AND meet a group of amazing moms in your own town! Get a great 60 minutes of exercise using your own body weight, bands and balls as well as our outdoor walking trail! Class ends at the My Place Playground for your tots to play. Meditation Practice (ages 16+)

Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or brand new, all are welcomed to this open community meditation practice. We’ll explore different styles of meditation techniques as well as tools that aide the meditative process. You’ll be guided in and out of each session. What could be more basic than walking and running? Local sports chiropractor Dr. Daniel Shaye of Performance Chiropractic will be performing FREE gait analysis. You may learn why your knee hurts, or your back, or your hip... you may even catch injuries BEFORE they happen! Please wear shorts and a tank type shirt for the best analysis. Level 1 Yoga: 6-Week Workshop (ages 14+)
Thursdays, Jan. 19-Feb. 23, 6-7 p.m.

This six-week workshop is designed to establish a sustainable practice. It will also be suitable for those who have never practiced before or had a daily home practice. We’ll methodically work through poses to strengthen the body, improve balance, flexibility and confidence, moving on as the class is ready. We’ll learn and progress together. Track Your Health/Know Your Numbers, Free!

Come in for a free health screening that includes blood pressure, body mass index and non-fasting cholesterol check. Then work towards improving your numbers with your doctor’s advice, exercise and better eating. Testing and counseling “on-the-spot” by RN’s.
