Concealed Handgun Permits

First Time Applicants

Applications for Concealed Handgun permits are available from the Clerk's Office for a $2 per copy fee (forms are not provided by the State) or on the Virginia State Police website.

First time applications must be presented in person at the Clerk’s Office. Renewal applications may be submitted by mail. The application fee is $31 and will be issued on a plastic card with your photo which will serve as an additional form of identification. Renewal applications may be submitted by mail with a copy of your photo ID and your renewal permit will not have a photo.

Virginia Code §18.2-308.02 states that any person at least 21 years old may apply in writing to the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the County of residence, or if a member of the United States armed forces, the County in which he or she is billeted, for a 5-year permit to carry a concealed handgun.

For new applicants, you will need to include proof of firearms training. Acceptable forms of training are listed in Virginia Code §18.2-308.02.

Renewal applicants must submit a copy of their current concealed handgun permit or previous firearms training.

Please note that this office stops processing concealed handgun permits at 3:45 p.m. to ensure all photographs and signatures related to the permits are finalized by close of business.

Please allow 45 days for a comprehensive criminal history check to be completed.

Your permit will be mailed to the address listed on your application if granted. If denied, a Court Order so stating will be mailed. If additional information is needed for processing you will be contacted at the telephone number listed on your application – therefore, please take care to complete your application legibly.
