Personal information provided to James City County in the form of email or electronic form is used solely to respond to your request, inquiry, or transaction. James City County does not sell or rent personal information to any third party organization. James City County does not provide specific information about users or other personally identifiable data to unaffiliated third parties for their independent use, except if required to do so by the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (the “FOIA”) or other law. As set forth in section 2.2-3705.1(10) of the Code of Virginia, you may request that your electronic mail address be exempt from disclosure pursuant to a FOIA request. Should you wish for your electronic mail address to be exempt from disclosure pursuant to FOIA, please send an email to the County Webmaster with the subject title “Do not disclose my email address.”

Comment Policy

Comments from the public are allowed on social media sites but those sections must be monitored daily during working hours to ensure the comments meet certain criteria. All sections of social media websites that allow comments must include either a link to the following comments policy published on the website or the complete text published on the social media site:

 The purpose of official James City County social media accounts is to present matters of public interest for its residents, businesses and visitors. We encourage you to submit your questions, comments and concerns, but please note these are moderated online discussion sites.

We recognize social media is a 24/7 medium, and your comments are welcome at any time. However, given the need to manage our staff resources, we generally only monitor comments and postings during regular business hours.

James City County reserves the right to remove comments that contain:

  • Vulgar, profane or obscene language and/or images 
  • Personal attacks of any kind 
  • Comments or content that promote, foster or perpetuate discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, marital status, genetics, status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or intellectual disability or sexual orientation 
  • Spam/repeated comments 
  • Comments clearly off topic from the original post 
  • Links to websites
  • Images or videos
  • Illegal activity 
  • Promotion of particular commercial services and/or products 
  • Promotion of political organizations 
  • Copyright or trademark infringement 
  • Personally identifiable medical information 
  • Information that may compromise the safety, security or proceedings of public systems or any criminal or civil investigations 

Additional Information

Closing comments: James City County reserves the right to close comments at any time as social media platforms permit.

 Banning: If there are three or more comment violations by one user per County account, then James City County reserves the right to ban user participation on that County account if platforms permit banning.

 Hiding or deleting comments: James City County does not hide comments on social media. Decisions regarding the restriction or deletion of content will be made by the Communications Office with consultation from the County Attorney

 Platform rules: Social media platforms may take their own action to remove comments or ban users based on the platform’s policies, not James City County. James City County is not responsible for those actions.
