Fire Department

 

Our Mission is to provide fire protection, prevention services, emergency medical, and emergency disaster protective services to the citizens and visitors of James City County (JCC). This is accomplished through the use of emergency preparedness plans, fire prevention codes, public education, fire investigation, and other specialized fire fighting, medical, and prevention mitigation response.

 

The JCC Fire Department is a combination career and volunteer department providing full Fire protection and Emergency Medical Care service from five strategically located Fire Stations.  The Fire Department consists of over 103 uniformed career staff, 30 nonuniformed employees and over 60 volunteers.  The Department is divided into four divisions.


fire truck photoThe Operations Division responds to emergency calls to rescue people, extinguish fires, protect property, respond to disasters, and to provide emergency medical care. The operations division responds to over 8,300 calls for emergency assistance, and transports over 4,000 patients to local Emergency Rooms each year. The operations division is staffed and ready to respond seven days a week and 24 hours a day (24/7).  The Operations Division also operates the Fire Department Training Center located at 5077 John Tyler Hwy.


The Fire Marshal’s Office provides code enforcement of the statewide Fire Prevention Code along with local JCC amendments. Fire Marshals also investigate the origin and cause of fires occurring in JCC, provide a review of fire safety plans for new buildings built in the county, and conduct fire inspections of all commercial and industrial buildings in the county on an annual basis.


The Emergency Communications Division is responsible for taking 911 telephone calls, dispatching of Police, Fire, and EMS units to incidents, dispatching for JCSA water and sewer crews and animal control on weekends and at night, Emergency Medical Dispatching, Radio System Control and Maintenance, and FCC Licensure. This division operates and assists with the management of the joint JCC – York County 800 Mhz Digital Radio System. The Emergency Communications Division operates out of the Emergency Communications Center (ECC) in Toano. 


The Emergency Management Division is responsible for operation of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during emergencies such as hurricanes, winter storms, hazardous materials incidents, and emergency action drills for the Surry Nuclear Power Plant. The Emergency Management Division operates out of the EOC in Toano.  This division also houses the department public education program, Citizen Corp, and CERT programs. 


 The Fire Administration Office is comprised of the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and Administrative Support Staff personnel.  Fire Administration is located at 5077 John Tyler Hwy and is open Monday through Fridays 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The Support Services Division provides for code enforcement, investigation of fires, fire safety plans review for new buildings, training to support Fire and EMS protective services, public education, smoke detector distribution, Citizen Emergency Responder Team training, CPR instruction, EMS skill training, EMS service delivery quality assurance, EMS regulation compliance, EMS budgeting, EMS supply logistics, and Fire Academy support. Support Services is located at the Fire Training Center located at 5077 John Tyler Hwy.  

 

The Administrative Services Division is responsible for WMD Homeland Security Antiterrorism programs, large project management, explorer scout programs, information management and technology systems management, and grant management.
