About Civic Engagement
What is civic engagement?
Civic engagement is the active involvement of citizens to ensure that the values and concerns of the community shape the direction of local government.
Civic engagement goes by several names including citizen participation, citizen involvement and community engagement.
There are three main parts to civic engagement:
- Citizen education: providing learning opportunities about the functions of County departments and general processes of local government
- Public information: communicating news, events, programs, services, etc. to citizens
- Public participation: sharing opportunities for citizens to take action, such as attending public meetings or events, participating in surveys, or contacting us directly to share feedback
Civic engagement is important because active, interested, and well-informed citizens help James City County government better understand the needs of the community we serve. Civic engagement helps us build a relationship with our citizens. This allows us to work more effectively to fulfill our County’s mission to work in partnership with all citizens to achieve a more quality community.
