Aquatics

Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations
There are individual registration periods before each swim lesson session. Registration for February classes is open through Feb. 7. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center and online at Aquatics. Classes held at the James City County Recreation Center. Info: 757-259-4185.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course (ages 15+)
Tuesday-Friday, Feb. 6-9, 4-8 p.m. & Saturday, Feb. 10, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
$210/session; $205 for JC/W residents (includes swim test, book and materials)
Class meets at the James City County Recreation Center on the first day
• Includes First Aid and CPR certification
• Must attend and pass a swim test (300-yard continuous swim (100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of choice of front crawl or breaststroke). Retrieve a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7-8 feet and return 20 yards, keeping both hands on the brick at all times; face must remain out of the water. Tread water for two minutes keeping arms out of the water.
• Must attend every class to earn certification
• Failure to complete competency test does not guarantee a full refund
• Cell phone use is not permitted in class and can be grounds for dismissal
• Must be age 15 or older by the last day of class
• Classes held at the JCCRC and Eastern State Hospital

Preschool Chocolate Workshop (ages 3-5 with parent/guardian)
Saturday, Feb. 3, 10-11:30 a.m.

Create tasty masterpieces with your little ones. Get introduced to basic chocolate making techniques. Dip pretzels and marshmallows and make chocolate clusters and other fun treats! Kid’s Valentine’sSweet Treats POPS (ages 6-12) NEW!
Saturday, Feb. 3, noon – 2 p.m.

Create beautiful edible bouquets! You’ll assemble Krispy POPS on a lollipop stick and add some chocolate lollipops along with edible color and sprinkles.These will be the perfect edible centerpiece for Valentine’s Day! Students will take home bouquets in a non-edible flower pot complete with the grass. Please note any food allergies with registration. Note: please tie back long hair and bring an apron. STEM Club: Engineering & Robotics (ages 7-12)

You’ll build different K’Nex® bridges based on bridge designs from around the world; complete LEGO® Robotics projects building and programming robots for sound and motion. Make a mess, make some art and make your mark… in clay! We’ll work on the potter’s wheel as well as hand build sculptural and functional pieces. Finished work is dishwasher and microwave safe. Rec Connect 
Registration begins Friday, Feb. 2, for James City County/Williamsburg residents only. Nonresidents may apply starting Friday, Feb. 9.
Parents, please plan ahead! One registration packet may be used for both Summer Camp 2018 and the Before and After School 2018-19 programs. Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to postmark date and space availability. Registration forms and program information are available at REC Connect  and at the Recreation Centers, Freedom Park Interpretive Center and Satellite Services Office in Toano.

Kids Storybook Yoga (ages 4-7)

This 30-minute class offers your child a fun way to bring together imagination, creativity and movement! While interacting with the book’s characters and plot, Storybook Yoga helps children contemplate meaningful messages such as gratitude, peace, self-love, respect and confidence. Indoor Pool – SUP Yoga (ages 16+)

Doing yoga on a paddleboard at an indoor pool?! That’s something new! We have it, here at the Recreation Center! The paddleboards are anchored in the pool to secure your spot. Spinal Injury Avoidance & Postural Improvement Workshop (ages 18+) FREE!

When the temperatures turn cooler, it’s time to move your fitness routine indoors!  From Ageless Yoga to Zumba, you’ll find a class just for you at the James City County Recreation Center. Brush the cobwebs off your 10-speed, your beach cruiser or your BMX racer! Don’t worry about the flats or the rust. Native Orchids in the United States with an emphasis on Hampton Roads (ages 18+)
Saturday, Feb. 17, 10-11 a.m.
Freedom Park Interpretive Center
Lisa Schioler, a Master Gardener and Native Plant Society member, will talk about some of the orchids native to Hampton Roads as well as interesting species from other parts of the United States. Schioler also participates in native plant rescues with the Williamsburg Native Plant Rescue Team. A $5 donation to help the Williamsburg Botanical Garden grow is appreciated.

Special Events

Black Settlement Presentation & Book Signing (all ages) FREE!

Freedom Park Interpretive Center
Join Col. Lafayette Jones Jr., a descendent of those that lived on the Free Black Settlement at Freedom Park, for a presentation and book signing. You’ll experience 18th century life more than 60 years before the Emancipation Proclamation. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

A one-stop-shop for everything Parks & Recreation has to offer! Discover your parks and facilities, learn about various classes and programs offered throughout the year and be one of the first to register for the upcoming summer camps! Informational booths, interactive demonstrations and hands-on activities are just a few great features of this event. We’ll keep your children engaged while you gather information about summer camp opportunities, sports, outdoor, aquatic programs, special events, parks and facilities, REC Connect, inclusion/therapeutic program and activities offered through our affiliate organizations. Offering recreational soccer with a focus on fun. League play culminates in an end of season tournament to decide the champion. Register your team under the Captain’s name.
