ChefsGO students

Applications are now being accepted for ChefsGO 1.0, a certificate program that includes 11 weeks of classroom and kitchen training taught by renowned local chefs, followed by four months of paid work experience in one of several participating restaurants. This is a unique opportunity for students interested in stepping into the restaurant, commercial and non-commercial food service industries. ChefsGO 1.0 is a program of Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC).

Applicants must attend one of three mandatory information sessions about the program on Nov. 13 from 3:30-5 p.m. or 6:30-8 p.m. at Legacy Hall or on Nov. 28 from 3:30-5 p.m. at the Thomas Nelson Workforce Center, 4135 Ironbound Road. The next program begins March 2018.

Classes are interactive and intensive, equipping students with foundational culinary techniques and knowledge. Students will be introduced to everything from knife skills to preparing sauces and soups, proper kitchen sanitation to food storage and much more.

Applicants are not required to have cooking skills or restaurant experience. Applications are available online and are due on Dec. 1. This program is open to any Peninsula resident, although students must be 18 by September 1, 2018 to participate. Students who have questions should visit TNCC’s website or contact Sherri Thrift at 757-897-3462 or by email at thrifts@tncc.edu.

Previously, the Economic Development Authority of James City County (JCC) authorized $5,000 to assist the funding of the pilot ChefsGO 1.0 program. Other program partners include the City of Williamsburg Economic Development Authority, Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance and the Williamsburg Area Restaurant Association. The JCC Office of Economic Development has participated in the program as well through both coordination and marketing efforts.
